What you need to know about satellite internet

While you might have already found out how satellite internet works, and what its main advantages are, there are a few other things that you might need to think about if you are considering satellite internet. Some might be common knowledge, or just plain common sense, while some are things that you might not have known, and will cause you to land in a satellite internet trap concocted by a salesman to simply push his wares.

Weather, a Satellite’s Natural Enemy

If you are considering installing satellite internet for your home or business the first thing that you need to remember is that satellites are in space. This means that there is a lot of atmosphere between you and he satellite, and rain might have a negative impact on your satellite internet connection.

There are ways of working around the problem that weather poses to your satellite internet connection, such as opting to use a C-Band system which operates at a lower frequency and is therefore not affected as much by rain, but this solution does come at a price, as the hardware used for this system is more costly due to its size.

Make sure you choose the right option

Once again, there are snake-oil salesmen out there that will flog you any old piece of equipment and disappear with your money, leaving you to regret your purchase. In order to make sure that you get a service that is going to be of service to you, you need to know that there are two different types of satellite internet. The one that we generally know and use has a two way data communication system, and allows for uploads and downloads. This system usually consists of:

  • A dish
  • An LNB (Low Noise Down Converter) for downloading and a BUC (Block Up Converter) for uploading
  • Coaxial Cables from the antenna
  • A satellite modem capable of transmitting receiving and receiving data

This ensures that you will be able to use your satellite internet connection as you would use any other.

The other system is a one way internet satellite connection, which works basically the same as the two way system. However, instead of using a BUC to upload data, it uses a regular modem. This means that besides being connected to the satellite, you will need to also be connected through a regular modem based internet connection. As you can imagine, this is not extremely useful, which is why it is important to ensure that you get the right system when installing satellite internet.

The technology of satellite internet is always evolving

In a few years, some of the facts stated in this article might no longer be true, as technology is always advancing. While satellite internet might not seem like an attractive option to you now, and you might think that there are better deals on other internet solutions, this might not be the case in a few years, which is why you should never dismiss satellite internet as an option. Download speeds are always increasing for satellite internet as it does for any other solution. The future might possibly offer even faster download speeds than what is available through modern ADSL and fibre solutions, so keep an eye on the skies, and never dismiss satellite internet as an option.
